The real number system involved over time by expanding the notion of what we mean by to word "number" meant somthing you could coun. these are called "natural number" or sometimes the counting numbers.
*NATURAL NUMBER(N):
1,2,3,4...
(The use of three dots at the end of the list is a common mathematical notation to indicate that
the list keep going for ever)
*WHOLE NUMBER(W):
Natural number tpgather with "zero"
0,1,2,3,4...
*INTEGERS(J):
...-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4...
If we added fraction to the set of integers, we get the set of "rational numbers"
*RATIONAL NUMBERS(Q):
all numbers of the form a/b, where a and b are integers (but b cannot be zero).
Rational numbers include fractions, terminating decimals(1.4, 1.3467) non terminating repeating decimals(3.2222, 5.818181)
That means all the previous sets of numbers (N, W and J)are subset of the rational numbers(Q).
There are numbers that cannot be expressed as a fraction, and these numbers are called IRRATION
because they are not rational.
*IRRATIONAL NUMBERS(H):
Cannot be expressed as a fraction (root of 2 or 3)
As decimals they never repeat or terminate (1.2345623189...)
